Happy Birthday...

…to my guy, F. Scott Fitzgerald, born in St. Paul, Minnesota (1896). Here’s a link to number of quotations attributed to him, many of them unfamiliar to me. Some are quite bleak, some are funny, many are inspiring, and of course all are brilliant! Complicated guy. I suspect this is not an original observation, but I bet he’d be fun at a cocktail party.

A quick sample:

“Life is essentially a cheat and its conditions are those of defeat; the redeeming things are not happiness and pleasure but the deeper satisfactions that come out of struggle.”

“In a real dark night of the soul, it is always three o'clock in the morning, day after day.”

“It is sadder to find the past again and find it inadequate to the present than it is to have it elude you and remain forever a harmonious conception of memory.”

“His was a great sin who first invented consciousness. Let us lose it for a few hours.”

“First you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you.”
